how it all started
NOVEMBER 2013. Thanksgiving Break. I drew my mom’s name out of a coffee mug for our annual family Pollyanna. Then I went back to school and totally forgot about it.
DECEMBER 2013. Christmas Break. My brain was fried, and I finally had some free time on my hands. Alright, what to make Mom for our Pollyanna this year? With lots of time, but not much money, I went to the craft store. I chose two cute little sketchbooks and some drawing markers and decided to make her a daily calendar of doodles, not realizing that I would dedicate the rest of that week in my room drawing.
2014. My mom called her calendar ‘the gift that kept on giving’ even as I was away at college. Every once in awhile, she would post the doodle of the day on her Facebook page and would receive a decent amount of positive feedback from her friends and clients.
NOVEMBER 2014. I thought, ah, what the heck? I feel like drawing…a calendar of doodles—take two. This time, I decided I would give one out to each of my family members and my good friends. With a little more time to plan, I gathered up all of their birthdays, quotes and lyrics from inspirational idols, quirky holidays and notable moments in history and chipped away at the year of 2015.
DECEMBER 2014. After over a month of hardcore doodling, I digitalized my illustrations and sent them out to a printer. I got calendars printed for gifts and for sale, just to see if I could make a few extra bucks. The first batch quickly sold out; I even ended up selling the ones I ordered as gifts and had to get more printed.
2015. I sold the rest of my calendars and have already begun thinking about new doodles and ways to keep 'A Doodle A Day' active and fun throughout the year. And it now has its own Facebook page!
